Abu Dhabi was once a small city where life revolved around the fishing and pearl industry, but the discovery of oil saw the capital of the United Arab Emirates transformed into one of the richest cities in the world.

The skyline of modern day Abu Dhabi is now dominated by towering skyscrapers and office blocks that reflect the role that big business has to play in the city.

Despite the fact the sprawling metropolis has become such a major commercial centre, there are still plenty of things to see and do during time ashore on a cruise, which is part of the reason why Abu Dhabi is so popular with the major ships that are sailing around the Middle East.

Amongst the main attractions in the city is one of the largest mosques to be found anywhere in the world; the imposing Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.

Built between 1996 and 2007, the mosque is the main place for daily prayers in Abu Dhabi and can accommodate more than 40,000 people at any one time.

You might also want to visit the impressive Qasr Al Hosn watchtower and the Emirates Palace, or may simply enjoy the chance to take a stroll along the Corniche – an 8km stretch of waterfront that features a wide selection of cafes, restaurants and shops as well as the best beaches.

The Falcon Hospital, where you can see these majestic birds perform a range of displays and visit a popular museum, is another major attraction and is unlike anything you might expect to see elsewhere.

Elsewhere, you can visit the Founders Memorial dedicated to Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who was the first president of the Emirates, whilst you can take a trip to a museum in nearby Al Ain that is all about the former leader and which is based in one of his old palaces.

Should you take a trip to Al Ain, you might also want to tour the historic fort that is one of the oldest landmarks anywhere in the Emirates.

Sports lovers might enjoy a trip to the Yas Marina circuit that hosts the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, whilst the state is also famed for championship quality golf courses and as somewhere where you can sample various watersports.
