As an island famed for beautiful landscapes at every turn, it’s little wonder that Sri Lanka is so popular with cruises heading for the Far East.
The capital city Colombo, which sits on the western coast, is one of the main ports of call for those who are travelling at sea and has become one of the top cruise destinations in the wider region.
Whilst it is stunning scenery and varied wildlife for which Sri Lanka is known, Colombo is very much a city where history has a major part to play.
Numerous historical buildings can be found across the capital and showcase architecture from a number of different eras – with the Portuguese, the Dutch and the British all having an influence.
Amongst the sites that you might want to visit are the historic Jami-Ul-Alfar Mosque, which dates back to the early 1900s and has become a symbol of the city, and St Paul’s Church Milagiriya – one of the oldest churches in Sri Lanka having originally been built by the Portuguese.
Should you have an interest in religion, then the Asokaramaya Buddist Temple in nearby Kalutara and the Temple of the Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha are also worth visiting.
The latter sits in the city of Kandy, with a trip inland providing chance to spend some time in the last capital from the era of the ancient kings.
It’s one of a number of trips outside Colombo that you might consider taking, with the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage and one of the many local tea plantations being popular excursions.
Back within Colombo, the likes of the Colombo Dutch Museum and President’s House, the old Parliament Building and Galle Face Hotel are landmark structures to check out with the latter sitting alongside the Galle Face Green.
The elegant promenade lined by coconut trees is a hive of activity throughout the day and into the evening, and will often be a place where you can catch performers showing their skills.
It’s one of various parks within the city where you can escape the busy streets, with the Royal Botanical Gardens being another.
