Dunedin Cruises

Dunedin sits towards the southern end of New Zealand’s South Island and is accessed by the Port Chalmers, around eight miles away from the city centre.

The city has proud links to Scotland, with the city having been established by Scottish settlers who chose the name Dunedin; the Gaelic translation of the capital Edinburgh.

Now one of the largest cities on the island, Dunedin is well worth a visit for anyone who wants to explore history and culture – which can be found in spades.

That’s certainly true at the Otago Museum, which dates back to the 1860s and is the most visited attraction in the city. It’s a great place to explore artefacts from through the years, including those with links to Scotland and also with Maori culture.

Other attractions within the city include the Jacobean-style Olveston House mansion, the historic Town Hall and Railway Station and Larnach Castle; a mock castle on the edge of the city that has been designated as a New Zealand Landmark.

The Botanical Gardens are a great place to take a walk surrounded by luscious flora, whilst there are also impressive Chinese Gardens within the city that were created as part of the 150th anniversary of Dunedin’s formation.

As with many cities across Australia and New Zealand, Dunedin has plenty of offer those who love food and drink with the Speights Brewery being a real highlight.

Located on the same site since the 1870s, the brewery is open for tours that provide an opportunity to see how some of New Zealand’s most popular beers are created.

Head outside the city and you can check out the local wildlife with a trip onto the Otago Peninsula. One of the best eco-tourism destinations in all of New Zealand, the peninsula is home to a varied range of species that includes seals, sea lions and penguins, whilst there are numerous look-outs where you can enjoy stunning views of the coast.

A trip on the Taieri Gorge Railway is another way to see the surrounding scenery, with the chance to follow in the footsteps of pioneers from years gone by through areas of stunning natural beauty – all whilst listening to tales of the gold rush era.
