Puerto Limón Cruises

Puerto Limón sits on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica and features on the itinerary of a number of cruise lines that operate trips through the Panama Canal.

Although the second largest city in the country after the capital San José, Puerto Limón isn’t a destination where you are likely to spend a huge amount of time during your time ashore, although there are various restaurants and shops where you can grab a bite to eat or grab some souvenirs to take home.

Instead, you’re more likely to be using the port as a gateway to the surrounding area, where there are all manner of things to do across the Costa Rican countryside.

Eco-tourism has an important role to play in Costa Rica and this is certainly true in the Veragua Rainforest, which sits around an hour away from Puerto Limón.

Within the forest, you’ll find a huge range of activities that range from walks through a network of guided trails to try and spot the native wildlife to visits to local dairies and plantations to see how the locals earn a living and to sample some of Costa Rica’s most famous exports.

You might also fancy a trip up into the canopy of the rainforest on an aerial tram, or enjoy zip lining through the trees on an exhilarating adventure that will live long in the memory.

An alternative view of the forest is also provided if you take a trip on the Tortuguero Canals, where you might be lucky enough to set crocodiles, monkeys and sloths in the wild.

The latter can also be seen at Costa Rica’s sloth sanctuary, which is located just along the coast from Puerto Limón and is used a rehabilitation centre for injured and ill animals.
