St Petersburg Cruises
Russia might not be the first place that springs to mind for a cruise, but St Petersburg is certain to be a real highlight of any trip around Northern Europe and the Baltics.
One of the great European cities, St Petersburg is located on the fringes of the Baltic sea on the banks of the Neva River and is home to a huge array of historical buildings that reflect the grandeur of years gone by.
Grand Palaces, impressive cathedrals and stunning cathedrals are all features of a city that has sometimes been dubbed as the ‘Cultural Capital’ of Russia – and which has been granted UNESCO World Heritage Site status.
Amongst the most popular attractions within the city is the Hermitage, a huge museum that is spread across a number of buildings – including the Winter Palace – and which dates back to the 1700s.
Within, you’ll find a serious collection of art from some of the biggest names around, including the likes of da Vinci, van Gogh and Monet.
Also worth a visit is the iconic Peterhof Palace, which is actually made up of a series of palaces and gardens that date back to the time of Peter the Great.
The Grand Palace is the most famous of the buildings, whilst the fountains on the Grand Cascade are instantly recognisable as a symbol of St Petersburg around the world.
They are also part of the reason why the city has secured a place on the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites.
The Church of the Saviour on Spilled Blood, the Mariinsky Theatre and the Peter and Paul Fortress – the fortress from which the modern day city grew – might also be worth a visit if time allows during your stop.
A network of canals that could be lifted straight from Venice can be explored at leisure whilst there is no shortage of options when it comes to dining and shopping.
The area around Nevsky Prospekt in particular has plenty of bars and restaurants where you can sample Russian cuisine if you so wish, or simply visit the shops for a souvenir to take back home.
