Even though you’ll have been spending plenty of time on water, part of the appeal of a stop in Venice is to board a traditional gondola and take a trip along the meandering canal network.

However, there is plenty more to Venice besides the canals, with a wide selection of impressive architectural treats waiting to be discovered.

These includes a huge array of stunning buildings that reflect classic architecture from years gone by, with Venice having been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Rialto Bridge over the Grand Canal, the gothic palace that was once the residence of the Doge of Venice and the intricately-designed St Mark’s Basilica are just a few of the attractions that are worth exploring whilst ashore.

Many of the major tourist sites can be easily accessed from St Mark’s Square in the heart of the city, which is where you’ll find plenty of bars and restaurants to grab a bite to eat or a refreshing drink.

With Venice sometimes referred to as an open-air museum, you might choose to spend your time ashore visiting the likes of the Gallerie dell’ Accademia to discover more about culture and the arts, or the Murano Glass Showroom where exquisite works have been created by hand since the 13th century.

Depending on how long you are able to spend in Venice, you might be able to head outside the city limits to visit one of the nearby wineries where top quality Prosecco is produced.

However, should your time ashore be limited, you can always ensure that you make the time to sample some of the produce for yourself in one of Venice’s many bars before heading back for your ship.
