There is ever chance that Norfolk Island is somewhere you might not have heard of, but this small island located in the Pacific Ocean between Australia, New Zealand and New Caledonia is one that you’ll certainly remember.

With a population that only numbers a few thousand, Norfolk Island certainly isn’t a big place but that is no bad thing, with the island being something of a hidden gem that remains largely unspoiled.

The stunning scenery is the main selling point of the island, with a number of native species of flora – which include the Norfolk Island Palm.

Head for the small Norfolk Island National Park and botanical garden and you’ll be able to explore a protected area that is home to a number of these plants, as well as various birds, such as the endangered Norfolk Parakeet.

Surrounding the island, you’ll find stunning clear blue waters and you can take a refreshing dip in those waters whilst relaxing on one of the various beaches – particularly in the area around Emily Bay.

The sheltered waters here are a good place to swim and also to snorkel so you can check out the marine life that is found in the area.

The island isn’t just about the scenery however, and you can learn more about the history of the island with a visit to the capital city Kingston.

Dating back to the late 1700s, Kingston is home to a one of the eleven Australian Convict Sites that are listed as UNESCO World Heritage site, with the former penal colony regarded as one of the harshest that there was.

That is in stark contrast to the stunningly scenic surroundings, which you can marvel at during a trip to the Kingston and Arthurs Vale Historic Area, which is focal point for the community and houses the Norfolk Island Museum and Research Centre.

In the town, you can also grab a bite to eat or do some shopping in the local markets, whilst there are a number of impressive spas – something that you might not have expected given the small nature of the island.

Considering that Norfolk Island is a destination that might not have been on your ‘to do’ list on a Pacific Cruise, it’s sure to be one that is memorable.
