If you want to enjoy some sunshine during a cruise along the Pacific coastline of the USA then San Diego is a port that should certainly feature on your list.

One of California’s largest cities, San Diego bathes in sunshine for more than 300 days of the year so you’re pretty much guaranteed to have some favourable weather conditions no matter what time of year you visit.

As with a number of destinations along the American coast, San Diego has a rich multi-cultural past, with plenty of opportunities to see the influence of Spain and Mexico in the past.

In fact, San Diego was part of Mexico until the late 1840s when – following the Mexican-American War – it became part of the USA.

Should you want to see where San Diego was founded, then the Old Town area is the place to head as this is where the first European settlers put their roots down in the 1760s.

Within the area, you’ll find a range of historical old buildings and a number of museums that help to show off the history of the city, whilst there are also plenty of dining and shopping options

Elsewhere, Balboa Park – a huge urban park covering more than 1000 acres – is not only the place to go if you want to take a stroll in impressive gardens, but it also home to number of other museums; which include the San Diego Natural History Museum.

The park us also home to San Diego Zoo, which is famous around the world as a sanctuary for a wide range of different species and for its conservation efforts.

Should you want to explore more nature based attractions, then the huge SeaWorld complex and San Diego Zoo Safari Park – where animals wander freely in habitats similar to their own – might also be worth a visit whilst ashore.

Heading outside San Diego itself, the seaside resort of La Jolla is packed with shopping and dining options and is a great place to relax and embrace the sunshine, whilst you are only half an hour away from some of the most impressive wine growing areas of California if you want to book onto a special day trip to explore the wider region.
